Four Kinds of Hotel

Most hotel writing is written to sell a room. This one is not. Blue Horizon Link keeps a short, deliberate index of hotels grouped into four chapters — art hotels, capsule hotels, casino hotels and ice hotels — and describes each property the way a good printed guide once did: what the building is, how a night in it tends to go, and who it suits.

Every entry is written as prose rather than a specification sheet. We avoid star ratings, scores and invented guest quotes, because none of them survive contact with an actual stay. What we try to record instead is character: the temperature of a room, the shape of a corridor, the hour at which a lobby becomes interesting, the small compromise each of these hotels asks a guest to accept in exchange for something ordinary hotels cannot offer.

The four chapters were chosen because each one answers the same question differently. An art hotel treats the building as a place to look at things. A capsule hotel strips the room to the minimum a body needs for one night. A casino hotel folds a whole entertainment floor into a large, serviced property. An ice hotel rebuilds itself from scratch every winter and melts each spring. Four solutions, four kinds of night.
